I don't know what I was thinking. But I knew I had to do it. With a trembling hand, I knocked on her door. The silence was deafening; I almost turned and ran. But before I could, the door swung open, and her eyes became the size of dinner plates.
I cleared my throat as swiftly as possible. "Hey...could I talk to you?"
A huge grin spread across her face. "Absolutely! What's up?"
I sighed in relief, not having realised before that I'd been holding my breath. "Rad," I said with the slightest of smiles. "Alright. Well." I told her how I'd been cleaning when I stumbled across her letter. Her smile faltered. I explained how hard those tiny words at the end had struck me. "It made me realise...I owe you an apology." Her head tilted curiously. "That last conversation was a painful one for me. But...I forgive you for that. And I would like to ask you to forgive me as well." Her hands went to her mouth. I winced. "I'm...probably a bit late. But I was out of line with how I spoke to you, and—"
Her arms flew around my neck. She pulled me close, just like she used to. I froze, my mouth hanging open as she nuzzled against my chest.
"My word," she whispered. "Egad and golly and such..."
I wrapped my arms around her in return. "Amen," I muttered, a smile crossing my lips.
A long sigh escaped her lungs. "Yes," she said, clutching my shirt. "I forgive you. I forgave you a long time ago."
My eyes began to water, but I couldn't help but grin. I lifted her into the air and spun her around. She stepped back, smiling as radiantly as the sun. "How are you?"
I swallowed at the lump in my throat. "Trying not to cry, to be honest." I wiped at my reddening eyes.
She was practically bouncing. "Really? Because my heart is singing."
A tear ran down my cheek. I laughed at myself, shaking my head. "I failed."
"Don't look at it that way," she said softly. She raised her arm, using the cuff of her sweater to wipe my face. "Nothing is irreparable."
I pulled her close again, burying my face in her shoulder. "I've missed you so much."
