Slam!
"Alright, let's go."
"Okay."
"Back home."
"Eventually."
He stared at me, disbelief written across his face. "Seriously? You're being petty."
"I have every right to be petty," I said, slowly backing out of the parking space.
"I don't have to use the bathroom anymore."
"I do."
He grumbled something in gibberish. "You're being ridiculous."
"I'm being curious."
"I can't believe you! She's not even gonna be there. Let's just go."
"She might be. I just have to see."
"Why?!"
"I have to know. I have to see how she reacts." I pulled into another parking space, yanked the keys out and opened my door. "C'mon, you're coming with me."
"Her car isn't even here."
"She might have carpooled."
"Gah! You're impossible!"
We walked in and took a look around. He grabbed my shoulder and pushed me towards the door. "There. See? She's not here. Let's go."
"I still have to use the bathroom."
"Fine! But I'm waiting outside."
I took care of what I needed to do and walked back to the car. We slid back in, and he leaned his seat all the way back, not looking at me. I sighed.
"Are you really upset with me?"
"Yes! You're being petty!"
"So? What's wrong with petty?"
"You had no business coming here."
"I had every right to come here." He still wasn't looking at me. "I'm not even sure I really was being petty."
"You were being extremely petty!"
"I said I was being petty. But maybe I wasn't."
"How were you not being petty?"
I hesitated. "I...I just had to see the look on her face."
"You didn't need to make me hold my bladder all the way across town, though!"
"I didn't know it was all the way over here!"
He pulled his cap down over his eyes. "Can we just go? I'm tired."
I nodded, conceding. "Okay." We drove in silence for a couple minutes. "I'm sorry."
"Thank you."
"I've never seen anyone so displeased about going to Dairy Queen before."
Finally, a smile.
